Thrift Shopping!

On Friday I mentioned that our weekend was going to consist of a little thrift shopping - and then I became privy to the Macklemore Thrift Shopping song and posted it on my Facebook Page.

Then I finally sat down with my iPad and was going through my Flipboard - and finally got to my Google reader to read my blogs for the day and low and behold John & Sherry had just initiated The (Completely Unofficial) Macklemore Thrift Shopping Challenge.

For those of you who don't who Macklemore is - enjoy. ( This is not the clean version so just know its NSFW.)

So moving on - Mr.B and I did get a little thrift shopping in this weekend and I was totally pumped! He was only slightly pumped.

We went to the Re-Use Center in Ithaca so it was a bit of a drive - but we were in the area so it was just the icing on the cake for me. I've never been and didn't know what to expect but I found a hood vent they had there on Craigslist for $200 that was originally $2,500 so I knew they had good deals. (Found it for a friend and they purchased it and it worked - WIN!)

One side was all odds and ends like kitchen stuff, some furniture, doors, windows, light fixtures, computers....and the other side was filled with furniture.I took pictures with my iPhone so excuse the picture quality - but people were already staring at the Redhead taking pictures of everything.

This painting was pretty big 2' x 4' I'd say and the scene was kind of cool and it was only $10. I'm having not buying remorse I think.

The Freckled Redhead - Thrift Shopping
This was a super old dryer Lady Kenmore and it just cracked me up because it was 25% off and who would even buy this?

The Freckled Redhead - Thrift Shopping
This little stool was charming with the little knit pillow that went on top - it was $15 and it had everyone giving it a second look - I saw a lot of people checking her out.

The Freckled Redhead - Thrift Shopping
I thought this typewriter was awesome but I was fine with leaving it there for $40. That is until yesterday when I saw one that looked exactly like it only black on Fab.com for $500. I think I need to go back!

The Freckled Redhead - Thrift Shopping
I like old jars and this one was really cool and I checked the bottom and it was stamped with "Made in Italy" but for $25 it was a little too rich for me.

The Freckled Redhead - Thrift Shopping
I also gave this little hammered ice bucket a second and third look but for $12 it didn't feel like I had to have it.

The Freckled Redhead - Thrift Shopping
I had to get a picture of these old mac's - there were like 12 or more of them and I wanted to know who was buying these also? They also had new apple computers and printers and stuff.

The Freckled Redhead - Thrift Shopping
Mr.B and I were checking out the lamps and then we realized there was a Godzilla of lamps upon us and we didn't even realize. If there were 2 I would've had a hard decision to make. $40 for that big huge lamp - that's a steal!

The Freckled Redhead - Thrift Shopping
I feel in love with the green cast iron sink - Mr.B didn't so it stayed there. I hope someone gives that sink the love it deserves someday!

The Freckled Redhead - Thrift Shopping
These cabinets were kind of cool - I think they were meant to be installed vertically but that horizontal one had me thinking. If there were more we could have used them if we ripped out the soffit in our kitchen and installed these above our existing cabinets.

The Freckled Redhead - Thrift Shopping
I thought this light was really cool - I'm not loving the brass - but a little spray paint could fix that. It was cool but Mr.B made a good point that it really wouldn't fit in with our décor.

The Freckled Redhead - Thrift Shopping
I love shutters and these ones were wooden and in really good condition. I don't know how much the big one was but the shorter ones were $5. I kept going back to them but ultimately left them for someone else to enjoy.

The Freckled Redhead - Thrift Shopping
These old radiators caught our eye because they were so detailed and intricate - in the background you can see one was painted bright red and the one Mr.B is touching was shiny black.

The Freckled Redhead - Thrift Shopping
This old stove was pretty awesome. I wish things like this were reliable because I'd so want this in my house.

The Freckled Redhead - Thrift Shopping
I died when I saw this campaign style dresser. It was $45 - I wish I had somewhere to put it but we really don't need a desk.

The Freckled Redhead - Thrift Shopping
I was just going through my pictures and was totally bummed because there was a bench at the front of the store that we were really contemplating but weren't sure of on the size and for $50 we didn't want to gamble. There was also a wooden window that had a diamond pattern in the grills that was really cool for $25 and I was going to buy it but couldn't come up with a spot where we would actually use it. I'm having not buying remorse we could have put glass in the panels and aged the glass. Oh well....

We walked out and I was looking at things they had in the front window and we went back in for a second look. We came home with this vase for $5 - it had a clearance sticker from T.J. Maxx on it that said $26 - so I can't imagine what the original price was. WIN.

The Freckled Redhead - Thrift Shopping
They also had this cool old Heinz's tin in the window for $4 - we have another oatmeal tin that my Mom gave me so this tied in with that and we can start a little collection now.

The Freckled Redhead - Thrift Shopping

The Freckled Redhead - Thrift Shopping
It was in good shape no rust and the paint really wasn't worn off in any spots so for $4 I'd say WIN!

The Freckled Redhead - Thrift Shopping
$9 later and I was thrilled with my first trip to the Re-Use Center. They had some interesting pieces that were fun to look at and a lot of things that if I could have thought of where we would use it I would've purchased it.

They didn't have any velcro shoes, keyboards, moccasins or big coats so I didn't get any cool pictures like that for the challenge, next time Macklemore - next time.

I linked up to John & Sherry's Unofficial Macklemore Thrift Shop Challenge and you can check out everyone else's good finds over there.

What’s on top

What’s on top of my countertops that is. I showed you at the beginning of the week the cleaners we use around the house - and yesterday I showed you some cool mason jar soap dispensers. I thought it would be nice to show you what we keep out on our countertops all the time.

I've mentioned how I’m a little OCD and it doesn't stop at the cleaning - I have a thing with there being a lot of things on the counters.

I like to keep the basics and necessities out and some things don’t really have any other home because we are lacking drawers big time in our kitchen. I was excited just to be able to add one big drawer over the summer (read about it here and here)..

Starting from the left I have my Kitchen Aid - I leave that out because that thing is a beast and who really wants to pick it up and up and move it every time you want to bake something - not me!

I have my flour and sugar out on the counter and I don't mind that I actually prefer it. We also have a toaster oven that is convection and use it for so many things. The obvious things like toasting bread, bagels, english muffins etc...but also for making onion rings, french fries, heating up many things....it's a lot easier and more energy efficient to use the toaster oven for the side dishes then to heat the whole oven for some french fries and onion rings. They also come out better in there because it's convection so everything cooks evenly and gets nice and crispy.

The Freckled Redhead - What's on our counters
I have a granite cutting board that I recently relocated from our kitchen cart to the counter because it's great when I need to prep stuff for dinner. I have a container with all of our utensils because we have nowhere else to put them. I don't hate the utensils out but I'm not in love with them being out either.

We also have a knife block that has some extra knives in it. That comes in handy when you just need to grab a knife quick to open something or to chop something up quick.

On the right of the stove I have 3 metal containers - in their first life they held cookies - and then my Mom gave them to me and now they hold spaghetti and fettuccine. I have them out on the counter because I like the look of them and they're easy to just grab when I'm making something and need them.

The Freckled Redhead - What's on our counters
I don't like having a lot of stuff around the sink. Paper towels, dish soap, hand soap and then an old Pyrex dish that holds scrapers and our sponge. We don't use a drying rack but I do have a microfiber drying mat that I use when I take stuff out of dishwasher.

The Freckled Redhead - What's on our counters
Our new cabinet that we added gave us a lot of extra space - because before everything was cramped because we had the kitchen aid, keurig & the toaster oven all needing a spot. I don't even remember how everything fit. So now on this counter it's just the keurig with the bamboo tray underneath to hold the k-cups. Mr.B's parents picked up the vintage coffee grinder for us and so that hangs out over there too.

Above we have the hanging basket that we picked up on vacation. Originally, it held our potatoes and onions....we have this new potato box (I don't think I've shown you yet) so we still keep the onions in there but the bottom basket holds extra bread and rolls when we have them. It's kind of funny because when we first hung this up I was cleaning the onion skins off the onions and putting them up there nicely - so keeping it real that hasn't been happening.

The Freckled Redhead - What's on our counters
The Freckled Redhead - What's on our counters
We have limited drawers and limited counter space. Some things we are used to having out like the utensils, flour and sugar and other things need to be out like the kitchen aid, keurig and toaster oven.

It's always changing - I moved a few things around right before I took these pictures. So I'm always adding and subtracting and trying to figure out what works best and really that's the best way. You can also kind of see that I added a runner that goes from the sink to the stove - it was one we had on hand that I'm trying out down there. So far I love it - I'm going to keep an eye on Rugs USA sales and see if I can get one for a good deal.

So what do you keep out on your counters and what has to be put away? Everyone's different so it's nice to hear what everyone's preferences are.

Mason Jar Soap Dispensers

Well, that title wasn't a giveaway or anything. If you follow me on Instagram then you probably saw the picture I posted late Saturday of a little project we were working on.

The Freckled Redhead - Mason Jar Soap Dispensers
Awhile ago I purchased 12 old mason jars from the local consignment shop for $12. I've definitely gotten my moneys worth out of them because initially bought them to use as drinking glasses and still do. Then we scarified 3 for our pendant light in the kitchen and I showed you that here.

So I decided I really needed to upgrade my soap dispensers and I knew just what to use. This is what I started with - 2 basic plastic soap containers that you buy at the store. I took the stickers off because I refill them, but they were ugly and had sticky residue on them from the stickers.

The Freckled Redhead - Mason Jar Soap Dispensers
I picked 2 mason jars out of my collection and  went through all the lids to find the most rustic ones and then enlisted the help of Mr.B.

The Freckled Redhead - Mason Jar Soap Dispensers
We re-used the pump part and we needed the hole to be big enough for the spring part of the dispenser to go through the metal lid of the mason jar. ( This isn't the best picture I just wanted to show you want I was talking about)

The Freckled Redhead - Mason Jar Soap Dispensers
Mr.B matched up the diameter of the pump with his drill bit and drilled a hole through the middle - easy peasy. We kept the lids screwed on so that it was easier to drill the hole through - you just have to be careful not to go to fast and slip through the metal and brake the glass.

The Freckled Redhead - Mason Jar Soap Dispensers
The edges were a little rough so he used a file to smooth them out a little bit. The hole was big enough for the pump to fit but it was a little tight so filing it down was going to help get the lid onto the pump.

The Freckled Redhead - Mason Jar Soap Dispensers
Mr.B had to really push the pumps onto the lid but it actually works to our advantage because then when I refill the lid stays attached to the pump so I just have to worry about the pump and the screw top.

The Freckled Redhead - Mason Jar Soap Dispensers
Here they are after we screwed a hole in both of the lids. I used lids that were a little rustic looking because it just gives them some charm.

The Freckled Redhead - Mason Jar Soap Dispensers
I don’t waste anything so I just poured the soap out of each bottle into the mason jars and filled them up some more with the soap I already had on hand.

The Freckled Redhead - Mason Jar Soap Dispensers
Here’s how it looks on the kitchen sink! We used one for our kitchen sink and one for in the bathroom.

The Freckled Redhead - Mason Jar Soap Dispensers

This project was so simple and easy and took us all of 15 minutes most of which was spent waiting for the soap to come out of the bottles. It cost us $0 dollars because we already had the mason jars, soap and soap pumps.

I'm going to keep them as is for now but might upgrade the pumps to metal ones later on - and I have also thought about painting the mason jars - but we're going to live with them like this for awhile.

Let’s here it for the cleaners!

I decided to make a list and show you what I use to clean around the house. I try to keep things green and environmentally friendly, but some things I just haven’t found a good replacement.

With so many tutorials on how to make your own cleaners and all of the new products on the market it’s hard to decide which ones to use. I personally like to hear from peoples experiences and how they liked them.

The Freckled Redhead - Favorite Cleaners
Let’s start in the bathroom:

The Freckled Redhead - Favorite Cleaners
1. Glass Cleaner: I use the glass cleaner for the mirror (obviously) and I also use it for the windows in the rest of the house. I’m not married to this cleaner it’s just one Mr.B picked up one day when we ran out - take it or leave it - it cleans.

2. Scrubbing Bubbles Bathroom - I know this isn't environmentally friendly but it works so good! I grew up with scrubbing bubbles so it’s just one of those things - I use this on the shower, toilet, and sink. ( I sometimes use this on my kitchen sink, but my Mom said it can make your stainless steel chip and get pitted)

3. Lysol Complete Toilet Bowl Cleaner - again I know this isn't the most environmentally conscious product to use but we have sulfur water and it leaves a lot of residue and I need something to get the toilet clean.

4. Homemade Bathroom Cleaner - I found this recipe here and loosely followed her measurements/recipe. It works really good and it is environmentally friendly so I might ditch some of my not so safe products and use this all the time. (More on how this product works in another post…)

So those are the products I use in the bathroom. I would be happy to give up my not so great products for something that was ‘greener’ as long as I got the same results.

The Freckled Redhead - Favorite Cleaners
1. Mrs. Meyer’s All Purpose Cleaner (Lemon Verbena )- I love this brand of cleaners for many reasons. These products are very green and they clean good. Max and Kota are very sensitive to things with strong odors so while they still sneeze when I use this I feel better about it. I mix this up according to directions on bottle and have it in a spray bottle. I use this to clean the garbage can every time we take the garbage out - I’m OCD and our garbage can is white, leave me alone. I also use this to white the counters down or the table etc.

2. Mrs.Meyer’s Countertop Cleaner (Basil) - I love the scent of this it smells really good - it is very strong though so it really hits you. I like to wipe my counters down after I cook and they smell so fresh and clean after I use this.

3. White Vinegar - I use vinegar for just about everything and Mr.B picks on me. I take everything off the counters and wipe them down with vinegar. I have used it to clean the floors. I heat it up in the microwave and wipe the microwave down. I also use it to clean the drain (pour baking soda down first and then follow up with vinegar and hot water).  It’s definitely an all-purpose item around here cooking, cleaning….you name it I've probably used vinegar on it.

4. Dawn Power Clean Dish Soap - I use this dish soap for no particular reason except I had a coupon and it was on sale. I don’t love or hate it - it cleans my dishes and that makes me happy. I clean the sink out like a million times a day - so I soap it up and scrub it with a sponge and then rinse it with the sprayer. I like a clean sparkly sink.

Floors & Everywhere:

The Freckled Redhead - Favorite Cleaners
1. Libman Freedom Mop - I can’t say how much I love this enough. It is essentially a swiffer wet jet but with a refillable bottle that you can put anything you want in it - gold if it strikes your fancy. I've used various concoctions in this from straight vinegar, to vinegar, dawn & baking soda….the possibilities are endless.

2. Microfiber Cleaning Cloths - I have my Mom to thank for these rags. I believe she got them at Sam’s Club in a big pack and gave me a bunch. They are awesome and we use them for everything. Mr.B wipes the belugas feet off with these when his feet are dirty. We use them for dusting and they are awesome - most times I don’t even use a dusting spray because it attracts more dust - so a dry microfiber cloth is perfect. I've also wet them with some soap and water and cleaned our microfiber couch with them and they work great.

The Freckled Redhead - Favorite Cleaners
1. All Free & Clear HE Detergent - I’m sure I've mentioned it but I have very sensitive skin (chronic un-explainable hives for 3 years) so I don’t mess around when it comes to products that I use that come in direct contact with my skin. Growing up my Mom always used Tide - I've tried their free and clear but it just seems more harsh to me now. I have a high efficiency top loader so I make sure to always get the HE detergent (I used to sell appliances I can’t stress how important that is!).

2. Arm & Hammer Baking Soda - this is another multi purpose cleaner as you've seen from above. I use it to clean out the drains, floor cleaner…but my Mom gave me this tip. She puts it in with her laundry to make everything brighter. I also think it makes things cleaner as well - so I buy it in big huge bags and throw it in with all my laundry - thanks Mom!

3. Bounce Dryer Sheets - I flip flop between using these and not using these. When I do use them I just throw 2 in with the load. The only reason I’m on the fence is because of my whole sensitive skin ish but I do like using them since my detergent has no scent this makes everything smell so good. They also help to de-fur things in the dryer which is really nice because it seems like dog hair gets everywhere.

So those are the products we use around here to keep our home so fresh and so clean, clean. If you have any suggestions for bathroom cleaners that are greener I’d love to hear them so spill it!

Frankfurter Friday!

Let me tell you this week felt like the song that never ends - it just goes on and on. On Wednesday it felt it should have surely been Friday.

I digress - it's Friday now so who cares! Mr.B has the whole weekend off and we've got a bunch of stuff to do - starting with some exciting grocery shopping tonight. It really is kind of exciting though, we finally used up pretty much everything in our freezer and the pantry is quite bare as well. Usually, when your down to the last few things your just throwing meals together, but we actually weren't so it was kind of nice to just use everything we had.

I hate to just keep adding things on top of things so it was very cleansing for me to know there's nothing lurking in the freezer. I went through everything in the pantry last night and there were more '11 expiration's than I would've liked and even an '09. How does that even happen? In the blink of an eye I just turned into my Mother. Just kidding Mom, sorta. :)

I hope to get some thrifting/consignment shopping in this weekend - it's been awhile since I found a jem and hopefully this weekend is my weekend.

It's been frigidly cold around here this week - as in below zero at night and into early morning and only getting into the single digits during the day. We are feeling a little cooped up and have been dreaming of warmer days!

Cheers to the freakin' weekend and finding some jems!

New Year - New Yoga

It has been awhile since I posted about any workouts or exercise I've been doing - and there is one reason - I haven't been doing any.

What jump started the whole thing was our vacation over the summer and I felt like I needed to be in shape - especially around my sister. I told you all about it here. So vacation came and went and I kept up with it for a little while but then it was holidays and the only sport I was doing was - hand to mouth exercises.

I struggle with wanting to work out or take classes and then the feeling like I don't have enough time. I'm an obsessive clock watcher and hate when things seem to take too long so I like quick workouts that leave me sore and able to sit on my couch right after. I showed you some here and here.

I have a desk job and my Psychical Therapist sister will tell you how poor my posture has become. I've always carried my stress in my shoulders and lately they've been killing me. I'm not even stressed - I'm just quasimoto.

I've been dying to try yoga and then a couple weeks ago I remembered that I got a yoga DVD in a klutchbox and I should try it out before I go make a fool of myself in front of yoga gurus.

The DVD is Kristin McGee's Power Yoga - and it is awesome. The first time I tried it I was in ultra beginner mode and didn't even have a mat. So just picture me doing yoga on carpet with Max barking at me. In the spirit of keeping it one-hundred around here - I was extremely sore the next day- after 15 minutes of Yoga.

I went out and got a yoga mat and tried it again because it really did feel good through the burn an all. I felt really stretched and relaxed. I gave it another go and was able to do a full routine with Kristin and wasn't sore the next day - thank you yoga mat.

The Freckled Redhead - Yoga Workouts

I'm going to keep plugging away at my new found love for yoga and I might even branch out and take a real yoga class. I even found a few quick yoga routines on Pinterest that I wouldn't mind trying out - they are more like quick stretch routines.

This good morning yoga sequence is from Tales from the Yoga Mat - it's only 8 simple moves and would be a nice stretch in the morning and a good way for me to stretch before I start my day.

The Freckled Redhead - Yoga Workouts

Desk Job Relief is from Fit Sugar and would be a great way for me to stretch out after a long day of - sitting.

The Freckled Redhead - Yoga Workouts

It took me awhile but I finally tried yoga and I think that after doing it at home for a little while I'll branch out and take a free Saturday class to see how I like the atmosphere of taking a class. However, I really like the convenience of being able to do it after dinner and then either blog, read, or watch TV after. Baby steps we're only in January.

Do you have a favorite yoga workout or DVD?

I've said it once and I’ll say it again I love quotes. Quotes about love, life, success…..it really doesn't matter I love a good quote.

It’s been awhile since I've shared some good quotes with you (like I did here) - and I could use a little push in the inspirational department this hump day - how about you?

I've already mentioned my love for the Laws of Modern Man & Laws of Modern Woman tumblr pages here - and this quote really resonates with me - sometimes you just have to let things go, especially your anger.

Target Tuesday

Target (pronounced: tar-jay) - a store that offers fun décor accessories, a wide variety of everyday items, and more fun décor items. I love Target because they have affordable items but they don’t look cheap. I also love the new collaborations they’ve been doing like: Missoni, Neiman Marcus, Nate Berkus….

I decided to start a monthly post of all the great things I've found at Target - so here we go - the other day I was in there and they had a ton of new stuff out and I wish I could purchased everything!  I was able to link up to a lot of the items through the picture and in the description so click away!

I really like a lot of the pieces in their new Threshold line - including this bedding. It was like a stamped ikat so it was had a really rustic feel to it. I don’t really need a comforter though - I need a duvet.
The Freckled Redhead - Target Tuesday
I pretty much loved everything on this end cap. Especially the bowls and vases in the top row. I really like the silver bowl on the left end and the white circle dish and vase on the opposite end. (Silver Bowl, Tall Yellow Vase, Elephant Candle Holder, Chrome & White Pedestal Bowl, Tall Chrome & White Vase, Chrome Spiral Vase, Black Picture Frame, White Picture Frame, Short Yellow Vase, Chrome Tray, Black & White Canister, Yellow Vase 3rd ShelfWhite Leaf Jar, Chrome Stool, White Metal Stool,Yellow Ottoman)

The Freckled Redhead - Target Tuesday
Love these figurines! Giraffe, Gazelle, and Hippo. They are part of the passport collection(linked to picture) and there is also a rhino, but I’m loving the hippo - he’s so cute.

The Freckled Redhead - Target Tuesday
I love this ikat lamp shade in the bold blue. I don’t really have a spot that this would work, but I wish I did because it’s so graphic!

The Freckled Redhead - Target Tuesday
I've been having a bad streak with my plants lately. I feel like I need these because I wouldn't be able to kill them. They are not your Grandmother’s fake plants - they've really stepped up it because these are very realistic. ( I could only find the one in the bubble on their website.)

The Freckled Redhead - Target Tuesday
Love the look and feel of this table. The light colored wood with the distressed mirror are really great together! These would make a great side table or night stand.

The Freckled Redhead - Target Tuesday
They already had all the Valentines Day stuff out and this little dish was so cute. It looks like a ticket stub. Unfortunately, I couldn't find this one on their website.

The Freckled Redhead - Target Tuesday
These crazy straw cups were so cute they had little doxies wrapped all the way around them. I really was looking for this candy bowl - but they didn't have it so if you see it send it my way!

The Freckled Redhead - Target Tuesday
I thought these canisters were really cute with the chalk board labels already on them. On there website they have lids on them in bright colors that are cute.

The Freckled Redhead - Target Tuesday
This cup was so cute - one side says bow wow and the other side is a little Doxie.

The Freckled Redhead - Target Tuesday
I must say I’m loving all the Doxie stuff they have out right now. However, I wasn't able to find this on their website either.

The Freckled Redhead - Target Tuesday
Last but not least - I came home with the Tory Burch lunch box for a whopping $5.95. All of the Neiman Marcus stuff was marked way down so I’m sure it’s even less now. However, everything seems to be gone from their website.

The Freckled Redhead - Target Tuesday
I didn't just spend $5 though- I got a yoga mat and a few other things from their bulk section like cleaners and stuff.

They have a bunch of cute new stuff in the home décor aisles right now and I’m loving it. Bright colors, coral, yellows and deep blues - if you haven’t been in go check it out! What is your favorite things from the new collections? I’m still undecided.

Oh, and for anyone wondering -no- Target did not pay me to write this post it is strictly my opinion and sharing with you the great items I found!
